Frequently Asked Questions

Is a birth doula the same as a midwife?

No. Doulas and midwives complement each other well but we have very different and important roles. Both are great to have on your team!
Midwives are trained medical care professionals that perform clinical tasks, and monitor the health of birthers and babies in pregnancy, labour, and early postpartum. In Ontario, midwives are covered by OHIP, and you can choose to have a midwife or a doctor for your birth.
Doulas are trained non-medical supports that provide you and your family with emotional, educational, and physical support during transitions like pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We help bridge the gap in support by offering continuous care and advocacy to our clients.

What is a doula, and how can a doula support me?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, spiritual, physical, and informational support to expecting and postpartum parents. At Bloom & Birth Doula Services, our goal is to empower you through pregnancy, birth, and beyond, ensuring that you feel supported, heard, and informed every step of the way.

When should I hire a doula?

It's ideal to start working with a doula early in your pregnancy, though we can support you at any stage. The earlier we begin, the more time we have to build a strong relationship and develop a birth plan that reflects your needs and preferences.

What services do you offer?

At Bloom & Birth, we offer in-person and virtual doula support, including birth preparation, postpartum care, breastfeeding guidance, prenatal education, birth/postpartum/ death doula support, sibling/family prep and emotional support. We also provide specialized support through our Facebook groups, focusing on pregnancy, breastfeeding, NICU/PICU support, and maternal mental health.

Do you offer packages? What’s included in each?

Yes! We offer several packages to fit different needs and offer add ons or personalized packages to fit your need, see the doula your wanting to book with to see the prices and to get in contact!

Do you offer virtual support?

Absolutely! We provide virtual doula services for those who prefer or require remote support. Virtual visits can cover all topics we would discuss in person, from birth planning to postpartum support and breastfeeding guidance.

What happens if I go into labor at a time when you’re unavailable?

We do our best to be available for each birth. If we're unavailable, we have a network of qualified backup doulas who can step in to provide the same level of care and support you expect from Bloom & Birth.

Will you be there throughout my entire labor?

Yes, our birth doula support includes being with you throughout your labor and birth, offering continuous physical and emotional support. This can include pain management techniques, positioning suggestions, and encouragement to help you stay comfortable and empowered.

Do you work with specific hospitals or birthing centres?

We work with clients in various settings, including hospitals, birthing centres, and home births. Our role is to support you wherever you feel most comfortable, advocating for your birth plan and ensuring a positive, supported experience.

What if I change my mind about my birth plan?

Your preferences and comfort are our top priority. If you choose to adjust your birth plan, we’ll work with you to adapt it to your new needs, ensuring that you feel supported and empowered in every decision.

How can you support me if my baby requires NICU or PICU care?

As a NICU mom myself, I understand the challenges that come with specialized care. We provide emotional support, resources, and guidance to help you navigate the NICU/PICU journey, and our community groups offer a supportive space for connecting with other parents who understand.

What is holistic care, and how do you incorporate it into your doula services?

Holistic care means looking at the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—and supporting all aspects of your well-being. At Bloom & Birth, we use a holistic approach by providing emotional support, stress relief techniques, and resources that honour your physical and mental wellness. We also offer guidance on self-care practices and help create a peaceful, empowering birthing environment.

What is energetic birthing, and do you offer it as part of your services?

Energetic birthing focuses on creating a calm, positive energy flow throughout the birthing process, often incorporating techniques like visualization, breath work, and meditation to promote a grounded, mindful birth experience. This approach can help you stay centred and connected to your body, allowing you to work with your body’s natural rhythms.

How do you support clients through the loss of a baby or other end-of-life situations?

We provide compassionate support to families experiencing loss, helping them process emotions, honour their grief, and find comfort during a profoundly challenging time. Our death support services include emotional support, assistance with creating meaningful memorial practices, and connecting families to additional resources and bereavement support groups as needed.
